Leadership and Hormones: Embracing Wellness in Every Season

Lately, I’ve been navigating the unpredictable waters of hormone fluctuations that come with
getting older. Most days, my energy feels low. The newest symptom? Dizziness when waking
up.
And let’s not forget the brain fog that creeps in just when I’m trying to recall something
simple. You might be wondering—what is going on? I’ve officially entered perimenopause.
As women, our bodies endure countless changes, yet the world doesn’t pause to accommodate
them. I find myself managing what’s happening internally while still trying to show up as my best self at work. Lately, that’s become more of a challenge.
Hormones play a critical role in how we show up every day, but we’ve been conditioned to stay silent about these changes—afraid of being treated differently or dismissed in professional spaces.
I’ve learned that suffering in silence only deepens the struggle and helps no one. That’s why I’ve
chosen to be vocal about my experience.
Speaking up has helped me avoid sinking into depression, reminded me that I am not alone, and opened doors for others to share their journeys. I even started a virtual support group for women walking through this season of life.
What I know is this: as women, we don’t always give ourselves permission to rest or take time
for self-care. We stockpile our sick and earned time like it’s a badge of honor. But in this season,
I’m listening to my body more carefully.
When it needs rest, I rest. When I have energy, I use it for good—going to the gym, taking a walk, or enjoying a bike ride.
When my mind is clear, I seize the moment to complete tasks. When my body demands a fan, I turn it on—no hesitation!
Some days, I can push through. Other days, I need to step back and recharge. And that’s okay.
There’s a reason we have sick days and earned time—use them, my sister.
It doesn’t make you less capable. It makes you wise, attentive, and whole.
Let’s shift our focus from simply making it through to truly being well. As a leader, I know it’s my
responsibility to model what I hope to inspire in others.
This season, I’m choosing to model wellness.
